Powers: Baker can change his flesh to sand, and back again, in moments, allowing him to turn his arms, for example, into massive clubs, or his legs into a swift-flowing dune. He is notoriously hard to attack, since any fist or bullet that lands on him will be buried harmlessly in a patch of sand.

Besides transforming his body, Sandman also attacks by creating animated sand creatures, forming sand traps and whipping up sand storms. He has been captured in the past by being trapped in multiple containers while in sand form, and is known to be vulnerable to extreme heat and electric shock, which can fuse his sand into glass.

Known History: The lantern-jawed ruffian known as Sandman has been a thorn in the side of law enforcement for decades. Born William Baker, a neglected and violent childhood led to his first petty thefts, which developed into a small-time criminal career. Living under the alias Flint Marko, he supported his wife and beloved, sickly daughter by robbing banks, houses, and working as hired muscle.

Everything changed for him when, on the run from the law, he fell into the chamber of a particle accelerator before a test firing. His cells fused with the sand on the floor, and he emerged with phenomenal shape-shifting abilities.

A long time foe of Spider-man, he has had a varied career. Once a member of the Frightful Four, he also spent some time as a hero. More reflective and conscience-stricken than most villains, Marko helped Spider-man fight his former allies, the Enforcers.

Observation: “Sandman is one of those guys I feel like I could talk into going straight if just figured out the right thing to say to him. But every time it seems like he’s turned over a new leaf, some new tragedy arises (usually involving his daughter) that undoes all the progress he’s made. Every chance to change his life just slips through Sandman’s fingers like… like… Well, You know.” — Spider-Man
